Moo Deng, Monkeys, and the Magic of Creative Ideas
Have you ever travelled to a town just to meet a celebrity?
I have. Except in this case, the celebrity wasn’t human.
It was Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo.
Her playful “morning bounce” videos have gone viral across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, drawing millions of views.
Time Magazine even featured Moo Deng, proclaiming, "She's an icon, she's a legend, and she is the moment."
This has had unbelievable real-world impact.
Firstly:
I wouldn't have even visited Sri Racha, Thailand if it wasn't for Moo Deng (but I gotta say, pleasantly surprised by how great the food, hotel, and rooftop bars are)! Though, I still can't get into Sri Racha sauce...
Secondly,
- The Khao Kheow Open Zoo saw visitor numbers quadruple, jumping from 3,000 a day to 12,000 daily.
- Between July and October 2024, tourism in Chonburi province increased by 27 billion baht in revenue.
And, best of all, there's a great simple story behind it all.
There is no grand social media strategist/agency behind all of this.
The person behind these videos is 31-year-old zookeeper Atthapon Nundee.
When he had to apply for his permanent position, the interviewer asked him,
"How will you help the zoo's future?"
Atthapon boldly responded, “I’m going to make this baby hippo famous.”
Moo Deng wasn’t even born yet.
But he had a vision and turned it into a reality through intentional, creative social media posts that captured the world’s attention.
How lucky are we to live in an age, where a device in our pocket can literally spill millions of dollars into a local economy.
How cute is Moo Deng (statement, not question)!
p.s. I’ve shared more about Moo Deng’s story (plus some unexpected monkey drama from my zoo visit) in my latest "Leanne on Demand Daily' episode today --> https://podcast.leannehughes.com/
